I don't think Heraclitus had technology in mind when he said, “The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change." But given the speed at which technology changes, there's one thing we do know for sure: technology changes every day. So it’s a fitting maxim when you’re deciding whether you need to update your laptop.
Because we often get asked for advice on choosing the best laptop, I thought I’d share some quick answers to questions like, "How often should I buy a new laptop?” and “When is the best time to buy a laptop?"
Can't I just upgrade my laptop?
You can't upgrade any of the important parts. Although it's easy to upgrade a laptop's hard drive or memory, those things won't make the computer run much faster. This is because laptops are engineered with portability in mind. The parts simply are not designed to be replaced. In addition, the size of the components (like the processor and graphics chip) changes from year to year, so, even if they could be replaced, the new ones wouldn't fit.
How often should I buy a new laptop?
The answer depends on what you use it for. If you are using your laptop to run cutting-edge 3D swimming pool or landscape design software for your business (you know what I am talking about), then you should plan on getting a new laptop every two years.
Why? Good question! Consumers (aka your clients) expect 3D to look better every year, and we work to make the software look better every year. The improvements that make your projects look better to your customers require more power from your laptop. Plus, a faster laptop offers you more than just improved graphics: it will also make it possible for you to design faster, improving your own productivity.
When is a good time to buy?
The best time to buy is when the new generation of video cards comes out, which is actually right now. The new series of video cards (GTX900 Series) from Nvidia (our preferred video card brand) are now here. These new video cards boast a 25% performance gain over the previous generation. Guess what? This new series is also cheaper for Nvidia to manufacture. This means the newer and more powerful video card series is also cheaper than the last generation.
